Writer’s Wednesday

Today I’m going to start a new series for Writer’s Wednesday on writing prompts…I know some writers use prompts daily to ‘start’ the juices. I’m not that but I do occasionally like to do prompts, mostly when I’m ‘stuck’. I use the prompt as a free writing tool to let my mind wander (like it doesn’t do it enough on it’s own that I need to encourage this behavior).

The series I’m doing is how to turn a magazine into a writer’s prompt journal. I came up with the idea last week as I sat at the beach relaxing and thumbing through the pages of the latest InStyle magazine. I often use magazines to make story boards/pages for a story I’m working on but I realized a lot of the pages sparked different ideas. For example, here is the second page of the magazine….

IMAG0191

I used both pages for this prompt

IMAG0193

I added the admit one ticket I had in my storyboard stash

IMAG0196

She’s going to be my focus for these prompts…

My plan is to focus on the same character through out the magazine. I don’t know her name yet (I struggle with names) but I do know that

  • she has a daughter – one of the phases above the admit one ticket is… she lures men to their death to protect her daughter. I’m not sure what that means exactly.
  • I know her eyes are going to have something to do with the story…
  • My hero is aware of the stakes because one of the lines in my free writing is…He has one chance to save her …

I’m going to definitely use the next two pages and I plan on doing those this week so make sure to check back to see how the prompts are going.

Do you use writing prompts? If so what kind are they and when?

Writer’s Wednesday

Here is the UNEDITED opening for my new WIP…Mock cover

“What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is up for grabs,” Jennifer giggled as she snatched Geoff’s doughnut.

“There’s an entire case of them.” He pointed the counter.

“Good, now I don’t feel guilty at all.” Jennifer sunk her teeth into the chocolate cake donut and her crystal blue eyes danced with merriment.

Standing, Geoff smiled. He couldn’t believe he’d been so stupid to think he’d wanted another woman. Guilt curled its ugly fingers around his stomach and squeezed. No, he wouldn’t let ghost from the past ruin their day. Jenn had forgiven him. End of story. “Do you want more coffee? Or another donut for yourself?”

“Are you trying to get me fat?”

Geoff shook his head and put his hands up in surrender. “You’re beautiful and perfect the way you are.” Leaning over he lightly kissed her forehead and the faint springy smell of honeysuckle from her soap filled his airways. “Love you.”

“To the moon and back,” she completed.

As he walked to the counter, he stopped and turned to his left. From the corner of his eye he’d sworn, he’d seen – nothing. Just people enjoying their sunny Saturday morning.

“A madcap coffee,” he ordered.

The woman nodded, tears filling her eyes. “Please sir,” she whispered handing him a folded piece of paper.

It seemed as if opening it had sucked all the air from room making it possible for his lungs to function and sent his heart into over-drive.

Geoff,
You are a man who holds so many lives in his hands.
You either walk out the back door.
Not a word to your wife or anyone.
Or I blow up the entire coffee shop.
Ask the wonderful barista for a view of the beautiful bomb I created for just this occasion.

Geoff lifted his eyes and the woman held up her arm. It was a bomb. No doubt.
The sweet scent of honeysuckle from Jenn’s soap lingered in his lungs as he stepped out into the alley.

Sparkle On…

In Love

In Love

The one thing my paranormal, space opera, and suspense books have common is romance. My ‘slogan’ is romance with a bang. So I spend A LOT of my day focused on love. Planting the seed, caring for it, growing it, adding storms that beat it up BUT making sure once the sun comes out it will be stronger than before.
In real life I focus on love – A LOT too. This Saturday was my 33 rd wedding anniversary. In those years we have weathered our share of storms the difference – there wasn’t an author who has to have a happy-ever-after ending to make sure we came out stronger and more in love after wards. I trusted in our love and so far it hasn’t failed me.

In my crazy day job (which starts up in 7 days!!!! Where has the summer gone????), I need oceans of love. Working with emotional impaired and serve autistic kiddos is not for those who don’t have a direct connection to a love well. “Burn-out” in my field is rapid but yet year after year I manage to find the love to do the job. I made my hubby promise that when I became indifferent or jaded, he would step in and demand a career change because one thing these kiddos don’t need is another person without love.
The difference between my writing and the ‘real’ world love? I can’t control the elements – duh. But how are they the same? I can control me/characters. I can decide to look at the bad in the emotional impair kiddos or dig deep for the good. Finding the good is often like trying to see the stars during a massive 4th of July fireworks display. Yet, I always dig.

Love/compassion is a ‘sparkle’ everyone is capable of – in all situations.

Hot Autumn Night Blog Hop

autumn blog hopWelcome to Hot Autumn Nights Blog Hop.

The great thing about being a writer is you can create the ideal romance scene. My prefect “Hot Autumn Night” love scene would contain:

(1). The Harvest Moon would provide the mood lighting. Which in traditional skylore is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, and depending on the year, it can come anywhere from two weeks before to two weeks after the autumnal equinox.

(2). Of course the background music would be a nature serenade. Some distant crickets (annoying when trying to sleep but sexy when everyone is nude), a nightingale, and maybe an occasional bullfrog.

(3). A restless breeze to provide the crisp smells of fall.

(4). Nothing says fall like a caramel apple. And because I’m a foodie with a serious love for drinks. My couple would have a thermos of Adult Hot Caramel Apple Cider.

4 parts Apple Cider

1 part Caramel flavored vodka

1 tablespoon cinnamon.

Warm cider and pour into thermos. Add vodka and cinnamon. Put in the plug (make sure it’s secure) and shake.

These would be the kick-off elements of my love scene 😉 Of course, there would be kissing, and very likely some sort of dancing while removing articles of clothing.

Make sure to leave me a comment and two will be randomly selected to receive a $5 Amazon gift card.

WELCOME

WELCOME

This is from my short suspense romance novella that I just finished. I’m still working a title. Heather and Max go hiking in early May to celebrate their second wedding anniversary. Well nothing ruins a hot weekend in the woods like a couple of dead bodies….

may-2013-001.jpgThe muffled voices had alerted him that he wasn’t alone. It would be odd to encounter anyone along this path at this time of the year which is why he used it. The Rangers were too busy getting ready for the Memorial Day weekend. He needed to be loaded up and gone by then.

Dropping his load on the ground and shoving it under some undergrowth, he slowly continued down the trail. The bone handled knife resting in his left hand – just in case. It would complicate things if he had to kill them. He hated complications. Rage instantly filled him causing his ears to ring.

This week is another hook from  my Halloween romance suspense Knock Knock

Blurb ~
New to Kanna, Florida, Lila Maxwell attends All Treats, a Halloween speed dating event in the hopes of meeting Prince Charming but instead one Halloween ghoul after another appears at her door until Cowboy Bill.

Jax Carlson has spent the last year focusing all of his attention on starting his own business. Hiring Lila Maxell over the Internet as his project manager was the completing task. Set to open for business in three days, Jax plans on spending a couple of days on his boat relaxing. However, his friend Erik has a different idea – a speed dating Halloween party.

Jax has spent the night plotting the best revenge possible for Erik until Sally opens the door. The woman dressed in the pale lavender Harem costume ignites a fire that Jax thought was impossible without the aid of his formulated dating list.

After a night of mind blowing sex, Lila sneaks out before they exchange real names believing it was no more than a one-night stand.

When Lila reports to work she learns Cowboy Bill is actually Jax Carlson. She thinks keeping her hormones in check while convincing Jax that love doesn’t follow a formula is complication enough until she learns the participants of the All Treats speed dating event are being killed.

Knock Knock.... answer if you dare

Knock Knock…. answer if you dare

“A lover’s moon,” a woman’s voice came from Lia’s left.

Lila looked over at the woman dressed up like Snow White. Her black wig hung a little askew and her lips appeared swollen.

“Local legend says lovers would arrange to meet in the glades using the light of the moon to find their way. If he got lost on his way, then the love wasn’t real because the beams only light the path for those with the truest hearts.” Snow White lifted a bottle of pre-mixed strawberry daiquiri. “A night of true love.” She toasted the air.

“What about those who just stumble along the sidewalk and find your door?” Lila asked trying to convince herself that the woman had to have had a better selection of date applications than she.

My Halloween Romance Suspense...

Knock Knock… Answer if you dare

“A lover’s moon,” a woman’s voice came from her left.

Snow White shook her head and readjusted her neckline so the tops of both nipples showed. “No. The moon will only guide those who are meant to be together, even if their true love only last fifteen minutes.”

“Has Robin Hood been to your room yet?” Lila asked still a little more than uncomfortable with the set-up of this event. Turning, she eyed the three security guards dressed as the Keystone cops standing in the parking lot. Going into an empty motel room with a stranger sent nervous bumps racing along her arms, even if the Keystone cops were the size of moving mountains.

“No.”

“I think you may change your mind if he were to show up.” Lila stepped back inside and closed the door. “Or I’m the only sane one here.” She went to get her purse deciding she’d had enough of meeting future dates to last her a lifetime. “Becoming a crazy old lady who lives alone and collects stuffed animals isn’t really that bad,” she told herself. A sharp knock echoed through the room. “Damn it,” she growled.

How could she leave now? Dropping her purse back on the floor, she stomped across the room making the bells on her ankles and hips chime. She jerked the door open ready for yet another speed dating nightmare. Instead a cowboy from every girl’s dream stood there. Well over six feet tall, his dark eyes bore into her as if challenging her to speak. His sharp jaw line with a cleft chin, tight smile, and chiseled cheek bones added to the rugged cowboy good looks. She let her gaze wander over the plaid shirt pulled tight across his broad chest. Dropping her eyes lower, her smile grew. The chaps and worn jeans did an excellent job of highlighting his dick.

At least this one was eye candy.

“Welcome to my oasis,” she waved a hand and stepped back. “I’m a single girl harem waiting to make all your fantasies come true.” She’d been waiting all night to use that line. Instead of chuckle or even a smile he shoved his card at her and grumbled something that she took to be a hello. Glancing down at the card, she read his name.

“Glad to meet you cowboy Bill. I’m harem girl Sally.” She had no doubt Bill wasn’t his real first name so they both had been smart enough to lie when filling out their introduction card.

Again his response was a grumble. Looks to make your blood boil combined with a dreamy body, though he couldn’t talk. Sighing, she watched his ass as he crossed the room. She could deal with the lack of vocal skills.

The point and grunt caveman thing was doable when an ass looked like his in faded jeans.

This is from WIP that I’m currently editing. It’s a paranormal romance suspense….

Ayranna snorted. “Oh Zareb make no make mistake. All of you are in grave danger. Did you really think the killing of one of your gargoyle protectors and a succubus waiting in your apartment was a fluke? But the Pacis Custodis are of no concern to me. It’s the demon and those who seek to control it that brings me here.”

Hump Day Hook

First, last weeks winner of the dry erase board and markers swag for Taking A Risk is Cathy Brockman.

This week’s hook is from my Boys of Summer – Spike… In this hook Rae is questioning her sanity…

“I’m going to the beer cooler,” Rae muttered to Tara as she walked pass the girl.
“The wells are full,” Tara said.
“I need to take inventory.” She snarled spinning on her heels and marching into the fridge room. What the hell was the matter with her? A three-way with Brody and Treyvon? Like that would happen, she and Brody been teenagers the last time they had sex and two minutes of foreplay pushed the envelope back then. Besides she’d never been in a three-way. Why would she fantasy about it now?

Ummm… why would she (wink wink)…

Motivation Monday

Good morning! I’m back at the evil day job of herding frogs… which is going to crazy especially now that we are done with Spring Break. It’s the home stretch 🙂  Well, while I was off for 9.5 days I made some GREAT progress in my writing. I rough drafted a paranormal featuring these two ‘motivations.’

Not bad for a couple of centuries old ghost ;)

This WIP is different for me in that is has two hero POV’s. It’s not a ménage, which is why it’s different for me. I have really enjoyed working on this story. It has helped me develop backstory skills.  My characters generally begin their lives with my story unless a previous event is needed then that tends to be the only thing I have.

My goal for this week is to finish this WIP. I also need to rework my writing que some other interesting plot bunnies have showed up and I need to decide where or if they fit in. I mean after all it is spring – a time of new beginning. And finding new ‘motivation.’ 😉
